The Rules

Each week, we need to do a few things and check in with each other to make sure we're all staying on track. Here's what we discussed, but it could be altered, depending on what everyone thinks:

  • Three 30 minute cardio sessions per week (at minimum)
  • Two 20 minute strength sessions per week (at minimum - things like pilates, abs, weights, yoga, stretching, knee strengthening, etc.)
  • Email out meal plan on Friday night for the next week - plan to shop ahead and only keep the foods on hand that are good to be eating so that there's no catastrophe if someone (me) craves some emotional eating (this one is going to be extra hard for me, because I live in a city full of delicious food that can be delivered. I will be strong.)
  • Limit exception foods (refined carbs, dessert-ish things, potatoes, other cheater foods)
Thoughts?

  1. What other cheater foods are there? I don't want to cheat by accident.

  2. Hmmm...well, corn is kind of a cheater food. If it's the veggie, there need to be other veggies, too. And popcorn is a straight-up treat, so needs to be handled as such (sad. I would eat popcorn every day if I could. But I can't). And if you're having chicken, it shouldn't be in nugget form, etc. Things that sound like food but are really a stretch, you know? That's what I'm thinking. But who knows...

  3. OK. Here, I feel I must beg to differ on a couple of points.

First, popcorn is a whole grain product. Just like any whole grain, it's the portion size and amendments (think butter) that are the problem. I am going to continue to have my popcorn on Sundays, but I'll cut back on the butter.

Second, I think potatoes are fine if you control the portion and preparation. I think a small baked potato is fine if you control the toppings and eat the skin. Potatoes have lots of vitamin C, thiamine, niacin, B6 plus several essential minerals. And a nice load of fiber. It's not the potato's fault that we like to fry it, butter it and drown it in gravy.

  4. As always, you are correct, mother. I just mean that I can't only eat corn as my veggie (should be part of a mix, even though I'd prefer to just eat corn) and I can have popcorn on Sundays, but I shouldn't have it every day because I like the butter and salt.

And the way I eat potatoes tends to be fried, so yes, baked is good. It isn't the potato's fault. And I do love potatoes. But right now it's too hot to bake, so no bakers for me for a while.
